What is the GMAT Focus Edition?

Steve Keating

You may have heard that the next generation of the GMAT exam, the GMAT Focus Edition, will be launched later this year.

The GMAT Focus Edition is shorter and more flexible. It concentrates on more advanced critical reasoning skills and data literacy. There are three 45-minute sections – verbal, quantitative and data insights. There is no essay.

  • The verbal section is just critical reasoning and reading comprehension – 23 questions in total. There is no longer any sentence correction.

  • The quant section is just problem solving – 21 questions. No data sufficiency. No calculator can be used.

  • The data insights section is modeled on the old integrated reasoning section. There are 20 questions. As well as typical integrated reasoning questions, there are also data sufficiency questions in this section. An on-screen calculator can be used.

There is one optional ten-minute break and you can choose whether it comes after the first section or the second section.

A significant difference is that you can now change up to three answers per section. In previous versions of the test you could never go back to questions once you had given an answer. Once you have finished each section, if there is still time available, you can go back to any question you have bookmarked. You can review as many of those bookmarked questions as you like, and you can edit up to three answers.

You can also select the order of the sections. Each official score report will only contain one exam score. This means that you decide whether you want schools to know your score on earlier attempts at the test. You can select the programs you want to send your score to after you have seen the score.

Official prep material will be available in the second quarter of the year and the new test can be taken from the fourth quarter of the year. It’s important to note that the current version of the GMAT exam will continue to be available to candidates until early 2024.
