New GRE Exam

Steve Keating

In response to the shortening of other US standardized tests such as the TOEFL and the GMAT, the administrators of the GRE have announced a shorter version of the test, which will be available from September 22nd, 2023.

Each of the three sections – writing, quantitative and verbal – have essentially been cut in half.

Writing: Now there is one essay instead of two. The Analysis of an Argument has been removed. The Analysis of an Issue remains. This section takes 30 minutes.

The quant and verbal sections have been cut in half approximately. There will still be two quant sections and two verbal sections. There will be a total of 27 quant questions and 27 verbal questions. The quant sections will take about 47 minutes and the verbal sections 41 minutes. The time available per question remains the same. You can return to questions within a section and change your answers as many times as you want to. As is the case now, you cannot return to a section once you have finished it. The test remains section-level adaptive, meaning that if you do well for example on the first quant section, the second quant section will contain harder questions. This is to your advantage because hard questions are worth more points.

There will no longer be an unscored section, which was used to test questions. There is no break during the test.

The same scoring system will be used in the new version of the test. Because there are no new sections, existing test prep material can be used. You can take the test at a test center or at home.

The test will now take less than two hours, rather than nearly four hours as it is at the moment.

Results will also be available more quickly. Now it will take 8-10 days for official results to get to you.
