German Test for Swiss Citizenship – Tips for Success

Native Speakers

If you’ve ever looked into naturalisation in Switzerland in order to become a Swiss citizen, you may know that applicants in Switzerland must demonstrate their knowledge of one of the national languages to ensure that their application is successful. This is set out in Swiss law. The details are defined by the cantons and the assessments are carried out by test providers who are commissioned by the local authorities. We will help you on your way to success!

What language level is required for the German test for Swiss citizenship?

The test comprises a written and an oral section. The requirements are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In the written part, the A2 reference level must be achieved and in the oral part, the B1 reference level is required in order to successfully pass the test.

A2 reference level:

You understand everyday expressions and sentences, can introduce yourself and answer questions about yourself. You can interact easily if the other person speaks slowly and clearly.

B1 reference level:

You understand the main points in conversations on familiar topics and can express yourself clearly about work, leisure activities, school and on similar familiar topics. You can also talk about past experiences and express abstract ideas in short sentences.

Important: If you already have a B1 language certificate, you do not have to complete the written part of the exam. You will only need to do the oral part with the local authorities.

Do I need to speak and understand Swiss German for the test?

High German is used for the written part of the test. In the oral part, you can choose for the test to be in Swiss German or High German. The test is carried out by two examiners, at least one of whom can speak Swiss German.

Can I repeat the German test if I don’t pass it first time?

You can repeat the German test for Swiss citizenship twice. If you don’t succeed after the third attempt, you will have to wait a few years before trying again. If you use any resources in the written section or attempt any kind of deception, you will be excluded from the oral test and the written part will be marked as void. If you do not arrive on time, you will need to make a new appointment.

What does the test look like in detail?

As noted above, the German test consists of a written and an oral section. It comprises four different areas: Listening (listening to short texts and answering questions), reading (reading short texts and answering questions), writing (writing a short text) and speaking (talking about a current issue with the examiners or with other candidates).

How can I best prepare for the German test for Swiss citizenship?

First of all, it is helpful to know the structure of the test as described above. Our German teachers are very familiar with this and also help to ensure that you don’t exceed the timeframe permitted. The structure is practised in the lessons so that you’ll know exactly what to expect during the German test.

If you already speak German, we can check your language level in a trial lesson. Then we can build on your knowledge until your language skills are at the required level.

Even people with no knowledge of German can register with us. A good 15–30 hours of lessons are then required to reach the level required for the German test for Swiss citizenship. However, this is very dependent on the progress made by the individual.
